Alaska round-up
Flying home from the holiday of a lifetime (that I hope will not be a “once in a lifetime” trip) with 26 hours of journeying ahead - time at last to catch up on the blog.

It was about a year [more]

Atlantic Rally for Cruisers 2002

Gallivanter II left Las Palmas, Gran Canaria on the 24th November 2002. She arrived 16 days 14 hours 32 minutes and 3 seconds later in Rodney Bay, St. Lucia at 23:57:03 local time.

With a handicap of 0.938, this placed us 26th overall out of 225 boats, 2nd in our class and 1st of all the Oysters. So the nice people from Oyster gave us a shiny cup and a magnum of Veuve Clicquot, thank you very much.

The Boat

Gallivanter II of Lymington is an Oyster 41 built in Ipswich in 1986. She is owned by Mr. Antony Duckett, Mrs. Rosemary Duckett and Mr. Martin Paterson.

The current crew owe a big thanks to the owners for allowing us to borrow their boat. We promise we'll bring it back, but can't say when exactly.

The Crew

Name
: Edward Duckett
aka: Skips

Position: Skipper, Navigator, Chief bore

Age
: 24 years

Comments
: With his fascinating knowledge of physics and the inner workings of a diesel engine, Edward's likely to fit right in to the exciting world of accountancy. Next time you go out for a drink with Ed, be sure to ask him to wow you with his one handed bowlines.

Name: Michael Langford
aka: Ogre

Position: Fore-deck hand, fish wrestler, pizza maker, hairdresser, eater

Age: 24 years

Comments: I can't comment on myself. How about we leave it as damn good egg and web-designer extraordinaire.

Name
: Laura McDonald
aka: Maca-moo by day, crusher by night

Position: Galley slave, queen helmsman, fisher of men

Age
: 23 years

Comments: Laura plans to write a cookbook designed for feeding crew on a boat. Its incredible what she can do with a lentil, and her scrambled eggs are second to none. Her ever increasing knowledge of fakey boating terminology is likely to bore a few poor sods on the kings road next summer.

Name: Jules Anderson
aka: Waterbaby

Position: Sous chef, stower, loo cleaner

Age
: 24 years

Comments: Julie's attempt to quit smoking lasted an impressive day and a half before she cracked under the pressure. Her commitment to chief stower has however remained strong, hiding crew mates possessions in the most unfindable of places. She has thus secured herself as an indispensible member of the crew, clever girl!

Name
: Jon Powell
aka: Cancer boy

Position: Strictly Missionary

Age
: 19 years

Comments: As the youngest member of the crew, Jon celebrated his birthday on day 3 of the crossing. Plans to sail around the world single handed may be hindered if he can't learn to sail under spinnaker without wrapping it around the forestay.

Name: Joe Cleberdon
aka: The Wee man

Position: Yachtmaster, guitar player, bird watcher

Age
: 21 years

Comments: Towering over the rest of the crew at an imposing 5ft3in, Joe took the prize for the most relaxed member of the crew. His ability to climb the mast without assistance ensured that he could escape from the rest of the crew's mindless conversation and ever-worsening smell.
